Murals

I assisted Hannah (@hmb_urger) on her mural projects this year. One was in Tagaytay, and another one was just in Metro Manila. The Tagaytay one was an experience. Inggo accompanied us and offered his cooking skills for the trip. We stayed at Hannah’s client’s house over the weekend.

We were planning on having bulalo, but surprisingly we couldn’t buy beef at the grocery. It seems like you have to buy from the butcher or palengke, but this was a few towns away from where we were. Actually, I’m not even sure if we were in Tagaytay?! The landmark was Twin Lakes, we were in Amuyong, Cavite. Huh.

It was a whole day of painting for us. We first sketched the design using colored chalk and started filling in the colors one by one. We both had one wall each to sketch and paint. Thankfully Hannah gave me a cheat sheet/print out of the design. Also since we couldn’t find any beef we took a picture with a cow instead:

The Metro Manila one was a quick mural. I assisted once again painting the flowers. I should also note that we attempted to do a mural last April, but went to Starbucks instead due to the heat.

Overall it was a fun experience. Will definitely assist again! If you want to check out the finished murals, please check our her instagram page @hmb_urger

Volunteer for MovedPH

Around November last year, I had the privilege of volunteering for MovEd Org: a non-profit organization that advocates for early childhood education. My friend Aira was the main artist who designed the proposed murals for their classrooms in Navotas. She asked Hannah and I to help in painting the murals. We thought we were supposed to paint a wall each. Nope! Instead, we each got a classroom HAHAHA.

As volunteer artists, we were asked to sketch and translate Aira’s designs to the walls so the volunteers can easily color them. Sort of like a giant coloring book.

Paint ready for today’s mural!

We used the org’s readily available paints. I think the paint was already old since we had a hard time applying it to the wall. So we had to reapply another layer for every flower.

The back of the classroom. It was a flower explosion!

Some of the volunteers were from MovEd PH, teachers, parents, and some students as well! It was a community effort to help improve the classrooms in Navotas.

Huge sunflowers! â™Ĩ

It took us the whole day, but we finished all 3 classrooms!

Teacher, bat nakapikit ako?

Because I love sunflowers. (Excuse the bangs lol)

Congrats to Aira for the beautiful design concepts! And thank you to MovEd PH for the opportunity! We had a great time. Thank you for inviting us. â™Ĩ

Huggle Hub Food & Drinks

A blog post that is long overdue is about my interior design freelance project last year. My classmates from High school contacted me late July 2017 to do an interior design proposal for their restaurant project in Zambales.

The first proposal

As with any interior design project, this didn’t go as smoothly as I wanted. A lot of problems were found on site and with the travel time of 4-5 hours, it was difficult to monitor the construction progress.

The expected final outcome.

Nevertheless, we did the best of the situation The restaurant had their soft opening on September 2017 and grand opening around November 2017. Their food is about comfort/happy food. And not being biased here, their food is delicious!

HS classmates effort.

I was also requested to do the mural outside of the resto. They asked our classmate Kat (leftykatletters on Instagram) to do the lettering. She was also my seatmate back in 4th year! This was actually our first time to do a mural. For first timers, I think we did great! â™Ĩ

Unit B Mural

A few months ago, I was commissioned to paint a mural for a cafe somewhere in Mandaluyong. Feeling confident because of my experience with my interior project (that I still haven’t blogged about!), I accepted the offer HAHA.

This is my first commission for a mural. I was referred by Inggo’s officemate’s bestfriend to her officemate who planned on opening a cafe soon. Since mural means it involves painting on walls, I can’t use watercolor! Acrylic paint is the best medium for this since its water-resistant. I bought my acrylics and paint brushes at Deovir the night before.

Details. â™Ĩ

Before everything else, I asked their requirements first. They wanted flowers for their wall that is around 4.8m (w) x 2.4m (h). I did mock proposals with photoshop so they could approve the final design. After that, we scheduled the painting day. I was supposed to have an assistant that day, but she backed out HAHA.

The final design was supposed to be around 75% lineart and 25% colored flowers. That’s the reason why I started with the lineart first. But then they changed their minds when they saw how one flower would look when colored.

Progress. â™Ĩ

Acrylic paint, water, and lots of patience. â™Ĩ

The top part was hard to paint. I had to stand on the step ladder while holding the brush with my left hand, while my right hand holds a paper plate with paint & a cup filled with water.

I found it amusing that even though this is acrylic, my style of painting still looked a lot like watercolor. Maybe it’s because I still used water for this ? I liked the effect though! And the clients liked it too. â™Ĩ

The daughter’s artworks. â™Ĩ

During the times when I was resting, I offered to teach the client’s daughters to paint flowers on the wall. When they finished, I painted the lineart on top to make it uniform with the rest of the mural. The left was done by the eldest daughter and the right by the youngest. I loved how different the flowers looked. â™Ĩ I feel like they have the talent to be artists someday too. Don’t you think?

Done! â™Ĩ

I finished the mural around 9pm in the evening. Did I mention that they planned on opening the next day? HAHA. I’m glad that I finished it on time! This was a tiring but fun experience. I would love to do it again! Thank you again to Diane for the referral. And thank you to my clients for the trust! â™Ĩ

Unit B is now open! They’re located at #69 A.T. Reyes Street, Mandaluyong City.
