Draw Native Trees

Another thing that I wanted to write about from last year is the #DrawNativeTrees contest held by the Forest Foundation Philippines in order to raise awareness of our beautiful local trees. They posted a list of the trees that anyone can traditionally draw or paint. You can post as many paintings as you want as long as you follow their rules of using the hashtag and tagging @forestfoundationph and their representative artist Cynthia Arre (the amazing wife of graphic novel artist Arnold Arre).

I have never painted a tree seriously. All I ever did during my “Interior Plantscaping and Flower Arrangement” subject back in college were careless and loose strokes. But what motivated me was the prize. I really, really wanted the Bamboo tumbler HAHAHA.

Honestly, I never knew that we had so many endemic flowering trees in the Philippines. I even thought that the champaca was endemic here. The common among the list was Narra (our National Tree) and the Ylang-ylang.

So I researched more about the said list and got surprising results. I painted a bunch to submit to the contest:

And do you know the amazing part? I was one of the winners! Woohoo! I got the pretty bamboo tumbler and 2 copies of the Forest Blooms planner. ♥

SW Art Tambays

It’s a new year, but I still have a bunch of things I need to blog about. I think January for this blog is for backlogs from last year HAHA. One of the those events is an attempt to have more art tambays after office hours.

I was supposed to do my artwork for the Cancervants event. Unfortunately, the papers that I brought that day did not pass the size requirements of the event. Oh well! There’s always a next time.

Since I had extra paper, I gave some to my officemates. They finally tried watercolor! ♥ They said it was a fun and hard medium since they’re used to CTRL+Z or Undo. But it was a nice experience.

I hope to do more art tambays this year! Let’s hope. ♥

Studio West Art Tambay

I think its safe to say now on my blog: I’m currently working for Studio West Philippines. It’s a design company that provides space planning and office furniture specification services for US-based clients. It’s a great company to work for and I’m glad that I passed the training period. Anyway! I got to know my office mates more and found out that some of them usually have art sessions after work. So I introduced them to art tambays lol.

What’s unique about this art tambay is that I was the only one doing watercolor! Louie (@louwewdraws) was drawing using his iPAD+Procreate app, while Anjocel (@artjocel) was drawing with pens and markers.

Done!

Art Tambay with Hannah

It’s time to bring back my blog! The past few weeks/months were busy due to bazaar preps and real life responsibilities. Now that’s finally done (for now), I can squeeze some time for blogging.

So a few months ago, Hannah and I had an art  tambay at her house. It was a very productive day, even though it rained like crazy during my stay. Since this was a few months ago, I decided to add some additional photos haha:

My art tambay sunflower. ♥ I started this during one art tambay and finished it in another one!

Two similar Van Gogh sketchbooks given to me by two different people. Thank you Ma’am Jen and Aira for these!

The completed sunflower art tambay piece. ♥ Finished this at Hannah’s.

Inggo asked me to draw our chibi selves for our Food blog. You can find the colored version here.

A dendrobium orchid on one of the test papers that I received from my artist friends. ♥ I think this is the Strathmore visual journal.

Round two is a Cattleya orchid on a Mossery watercolor notebook sample. ♥

The photo reference for both orchids are mama’s orchids in our garden.

This one is a unique art tambay. I did this with Mari, Inggo’s 7 year old cousin who LOVES everything artsy. We were waiting for him to arrive from his Japan trip.

What happened? Have I lost the drive to continue blogging? But I have lots more to write! Ughh. See you hopefully next time.

Birthday Art Tambay

A few months ago, we celebrated Ivy and Hannah’s birthday. We had dinner at one of my recommended restaurants near our area. Before that though, we had an art tambay first with Aira. (and a special guest!)

I was the first to arrive at our usual meetup place. After ordering my drink, I noticed that another group was holding a watercolor session as well! It looked like one was teaching the basics to the other girl.

It turns out that Aira knew the one teaching LOL and after their watercolor lesson, Aira invited her to our table. Her name’s Paola (@paola_koala), a teacher from a school nearby.

Around this time, I was doing the #ComeFloralwithUs prompt.

After our art tambay session, Hannah and I met up with Ivy at Fishermall before going to Zaan, a sort of hidden Japanese restaurant at Mother Ignacia. I don’t have photos of the restaurant or the food, but Inggo did a review of our visit a few months back. We chose this place solely for the reason to joke about “Zaan tayo kakain?” or “Kung zaan zaan na tayo pumunta today!”. HAHA.

Dessert at Artsy cafe.

While walking back to Pantranco, the rain poured hard so we had to take shelter somewhere. We were nearby Mandarin Sky and Artsy Cafe at Panay Ave., so we decided to have dessert and coffee at Artsy Cafe before going home. These two restaurants are linked together via the Function room. Ivy was happy with the interiors of both restaurants, haha.

My coffee.

Cutie cat. But how do you pour with this thing?!

Ivy went home after this. For Hannah and I though, we were supposed to just buy milktea from Macao and go home. But we lost track of time and chitchatted the whole night HAHA. Overall, it was a fun day with my best friends. We even took a photo with Ruth (by using a cellphone). ♥

Art tambay

A few months ago, Clair invited me to join their art tambay at Trinoma. This was months in the making since it was hard to get everyone together due to their busy schedule. We met up at CBTL Trinoma.

Work in progress.

The people who attended were me, Clair (@claircolors), Priane (@priichan), Kat (@kiyasuriin), Chichi (@chichilittle) and Francis. They met up at around 11am, while I just woke up at that time HUHUHU. When I arrived, they were already painting their artworks. The task for that day was to make a self-portrait. I hurriedly took a selfie HAHA and sketched myself.

It’s been a while. ♥

So far, I’m quite satisfied with my personalized watercolor palette. I can do florals and the occasional portraits. I really love seamountainco’s Yellow Ochre, Philippine Indigo, and Indian Red! Honestly, I felt a bit pressured because everyone’s SO GOOD! Check out their artworks below:

Thank you for the invite! I hope I could join the next one. ♥ Thank you for sharing your convention experiences and other stuff.

Just Add Water 3 / Agueda

After a long hiatus, one of my favorite events was held again last month! This is Just Add Water 3 at SM Aura. It was organized by the members of WatercoloristsPH.

I usually attend this event with Hannah and the rest of the January Makers PH girls. But due to their work schedule, they couldn’t make it this time. Thankfully, Aira and Inggo accompanied me! ♥

Daniel Smith paint swatch from Craft Carrot ♥

I allowed myself to splurge on watercolor materials for this event. Since Craft Carrot was on sale that day, I finally bought a Daniel Smith Sap Green! It was around 450 even with the discount, but I know that this will last me for a long time. ♥ I tried to find a brush holder from the other sellers, unfortunately they don’t have it huhu.

One of the reasons that we went here is because of Agueda. I ordered a custom 4″x4″ cookie and some Paint-your-Own cookie set from her to give as gifts. Of course, I painted my own set right away.

The first attempts at a peony.

Done!

A close up view. ♥

I didn’t use my cookie “palette” and requested if I could use her paints. Thanks, Dandi!

I won !

Painting my round set. ♥

Hydrangeaaaaaas. ♥ Loved how this one turned out!

Aira’s creations + mine. ♥

Behind the scenes photoshoot.

Dandi offered that we have our creations “dusted” so it would dry quickly. Back in the first Agueda PYO cookie, we had to let it dry for a while before we could pack it.

Still so pretty. ♥

Even though we stayed there for just a few hours, we still had fun. ♥ Thank you Agueda for accommodating my orders! Until next time.

工筆 Art Tambay

A few weeks ago, Ivy invited Hannah and I to an Art tambay at Binondo. Since this was the first time that Ivy initiated an art tambay, we agreed right away. In case you’re new to my blog – we usually do our art tambays at public places like cafes or coffee shops where we hang out(tambay) and paint.

Ivy also mentioned that it was going to be an art tambay slash 工筆 painting workshop. Hannah and I thought it was an art tambay with an option of joining the informal workshop. Another funny thing is that I invited my friend Anj thinking that this was an art tambay. BUT NO HAHAHA. It really was a workshop conducted by one of the attendees’ churchmates. In fact, we three (Hannah, Anj, and me) were the only peeps who weren’t from the same church.

There’s a coin there to prevent the paper from flying awayyyy.

工筆 or “Gong Pi” is a Chinese technique /style of painting that uses highly detailed brushstrokes. It uses the thinnest paper not suitable for the watercolorist me HAHAHA. The first part was to trace the drawing on Shuen/Xuan paper using the smallest mopit brush and ink. Hannah and Ivy were already joking that I wouldn’t listen to the workshop because I hated tracing lines (or I would trace and not follow it eventually).

Thank you to the organizers for the free food. ♥ We had lunch first while waiting for the ink to dry. After drying the ink, you’ll start adding in the colors! I used my Holbein Carmine color for the flowers. There were rules in adding /painting the colors I’m not even sure if I did this right HAHA. They said to put the darkest/solid part of the colors in the center or end of a petal. You’ll then spread the color using another brush with loaded clean water. Uncle said that my watercolor skillz were showing – I don’t know if that’s a bad or good thing though!

Loving the color so far!

For the leaves – they said to put a watery black layer first. In gong pi painting, they don’t use greens! They use what they call “Chinese blue” after layering first the black shadow base. There were rules also in painting this. Something about leaving (heh) whites to imitate the veins.

My final output. ♥

Since I don’t have what they called “Chinese blue”, I used @seamountainco ‘s Philippine Indigo & a bit of Ultramarine. For the yellow stamen, I used a very thick Naples yellow. I also glazed a bit of yellow on some of the leaves to have that green-ish effect.

Close up!

Overall it was a fun & new experience! Painting on the thinnest paper + using watercolor = CHALLENGING! But I liked the challenge. I think 工筆 would help you gauge your skill level in watercolor. You’ll discover if you’re comfortable with your current materials (brush and watercolor) here. Especially the brush, the thin paper is brutal if you don’t know how much water is loaded on your brush. One thing I hated were the rules. There were so much rules I think I broke all of them HAHA. Uncle said my final output was not the traditional 工筆  painting, but its okay!

Uncle said that I should try the opposite of Gong Pi, which is 寫意 or Xieyi painting (freehand brush work style painting). If I can find someone to teach me that style, I’m game for it HAHA.

And that’s it for now HAHAHA. It’s been 2 months since my last blog post. I’m so sorry. The workaholic me is trying her best to update this blog of mine. Huhu. Until next time!

Art Tambays

Hello! I’m still adjusting to my new schedule huhu but hopefully I get to squeeze time to do art stuff soon! For now let me reminisce about my art tambays with friends from the past months.

Poppies. ♥

The first one was way back in March at Coffee Project. There were the usual peeps Clair (@claircolors), Hannah (@hmb_urger), Nickey (@wyrdlittlethings) and new peeps Cami (@c4m1sama) and Dani (@cyanoscarlet). ♥ Everyone had a good time, I think! All of us had the same interests and talked about anime / manga hahaha. We even had an art activity where one would draw the lineart and another person would color.

I drew the lineart on the lower left and colored the one beside it. ♥

The second art tambay was at Coffee Project again last Labor day. It was comprised of me, Hannah, Clair, Mjoy (@majoy525), and Clair’s other friends. Jean was also supposed to join us, unfortunately something came up.

A momo botan. ♥

Nothing significant to write about this one. Except that I really, really love my Berkeley watercolor pad! HAHA. And I got to try Clair’s carmine color from Holbein. I bought myself a tube when I got my salary HAHA.

Just some floral practice.

The third one was more intimate. I met with Hannah & Aira (@airadenisee) for our usual Banawe Art Tambay. Aira and I had a “birthday exchange gift” thing since our birthdays were last March & April HAHA. I also brought larger paper with me that time. It was an A4 Aquafine Daler Rowney that I bought from SG a few years ago. Still trying to get used to it! Hannah’s favorite paper is the Canson Montval one.

Left: my painting. | Right: Hannah’s bubble princess painting HAHA.

Dramatic light that got a hundred likes HAHAHA. ♥

The last one is with the January Makers PH at CBTL Katips. We had a hard time painting due to the bad lighting. But it was fun bonding and catching up with the original art tambayers ♥ Present were: Me, Hannah, Shine (@tingeofsunshine), Monique (@mnq_illustration), and Jean (@seamountainco & @jeankelly11)

Apparently not in the mood to paint.

I hate this rose. Huhu.

And that’s it! Blogging about this made me realize that I have a LOT of pending things to do and talk about! Argh! But real life responsibilities first huhuhu. I’ll try my best to blog more in the future! In the meantime, I update a lot more on Instagram so please visit me there. ♥ (I find this funny since two years ago, I ranted about it this HAHA).

Art vs Artist

I noticed that some of my friends were joining the #ArtVsArtist hashtag on Instagram. Being the inggitera that I am, I also joined in HAHA. Here are my versions:

Flower version. ♥

Portrait version. ♥

Yes, that’s me in the middle. I used to have my signature straight bangs but maintaining it was a chore, so I decided to let it grow for a while. This was taken during my birthday celebration a few days ago. ♥

Florals

Since I’m usually known as the flower painter in our group, that’s the first photo. I liked how bright, fun, and a little bit loose my flowers looked here. I hope to paint more different flowers than these four: sunflowers, hydrangeas, peonies, and magnolias!

Portrait

Ever since I was young, I always drew in anime style. Through the years though, I’ve been practicing realistic/semi-realistic portraits. And this version shows the different styles that I can do. ♥

The top layer represents my childhood HAHA. Back then, I stubbornly did drawings on MS Paint using a mouse with my right hand. Stubbornly because my left hand is the dominant one. It paid off, I think! The top layer are my latest drawings on MS Paint.

The middle layer shows my favorites from my Inktober challenge last year. I can also do traditional ink drawings using unipins and various pens. My stubborn, younger self also indulged in using these pens on making my own manga HAHAHA. That again, paid off through constant practice and obsession (and through drafting class in college).

The lower layer shows my progress. Although far from my realistic portrait goals, I’m satisfied with what I can do now. The people on the lower left are the founders of our January Makers PH group. The middle one is the family portrait commission that I did last year for a friend. And the last one is just another portrait practice using watercolor.
